Caterpillar has expanded its medium wheel loader line-up with the launch of the new Cat 980 GC, a heavy-duty machine designed to deliver performance, comfort, and low fuel consumption at an economical price point. Positioned to meet the diverse needs of construction, quarrying, and industrial operations, the 980 GC is easy to own and operate, with features tailored for both seasoned and less experienced operators.
The 980 GC has configurations for highly regulated and lesser regulated markets to meet region-specific emissions standards while key features remain largely the same.
It is powered by a Cat C13 engine, the new model integrates proven components with Caterpillar’s advanced machine systems. It offers robust performance while maintaining low operating costs through technologies such as the Engine Idle Management System (EIMS), Auto Engine Idle Shutdown, load-sensing hydraulics, and an on-demand fan.
The new model joins a Caterpillar wheel loader lineage that dates back to 1959 with the No. 944, and it is backed by the brand’s global dealer support network. The 980 GC is available in configurations for both highly regulated and lesser regulated markets, with region-specific emissions standards.

Designed for Versatility and Productivity
The 980 GC’s four forward and reverse speeds, supported by a field-proven planetary powershift transmission and Electronic Clutch Pressure Control (ECPC), deliver smooth gear changes and a top speed of 39.8 km/h. Optional features such as ride control and a limited slip differential enhance performance in challenging terrain.
Offering bucket capacities from 4.3 to 5.8 m³, the loader is equipped with Cat Performance Series buckets designed to improve material retention and reduce dig time. The Z-bar linkage design and load-sensing hydraulics ensure high breakout forces and fuel-efficient performance, while compatibility with Cat Fusion quick couplers expands its tool versatility.
Connected and Configurable
The 980 GC comes standard with Cat VisionLink, providing real-time monitoring of operating parameters such as location, hours, fuel usage, and diagnostic data. Optional Cat Payload systems – including a trade-approved version in select markets – allow precise loading to specification, helping fleet operators improve truck loading efficiency and reduce material waste.
Comfort Meets Safety
The cab is engineered for operator comfort with intuitive displays, pilot-operated hydraulic controls, and a mechanical suspension seat with customisable settings. Visibility is enhanced by a wide front windshield, dual access ladders, rearview camera, and large mirrors. Air conditioning and ergonomic airflow vents support comfortable operation in all climates.
Service Made Simple
Designed for simplified maintenance, the 980 GC features grouped service points, remote grease fittings, a tilt-up hood, and optional Cat Autolube System for automated lubrication. These features help reduce downtime and ensure consistent performance across operations.
