Caterpillar has unveiled a new heavy-duty (HD) undercarriage configuration for its Cat® 325 Excavator, designed to deliver greater stability, balance, and durability in demanding operating environments such as site preparation, land clearing, and forestry.
The long HD undercarriage, featuring an oversized 203-mm (8-in) track pitch, provides exceptional traction and ground-holding performance on uneven terrain. It is paired with a dedicated 7.5-tonne (16,540-lb) counterweight that enhances control and machine balance, even when equipped with heavier attachments including blades, Variable Angle Booms (VAB), heavy-duty sticks, thumbs, or quick couplers.
Adrian Grigorita, Vice President of Product Management for Medium Hydraulic Excavators at Caterpillar, said the new configuration was developed to better meet real-world customer demands:
“We are excited to launch the new 325 configuration. Designed with our customers in mind, it supports heavier work tool combinations while delivering enhanced stability. The extended undercarriage and dedicated counterweight contribute to a solid, balanced platform, while increased drawbar pull and swing torque help improve performance on challenging terrain and slopes.”
The HD package also includes larger final drives and motors, a stronger swing bearing, and the ability to fit either Reach or VAB fronts —w ith or without a blade. From the factory, the machine is equipped with a thumb-ready stick and quick coupler circuit, minimizing the need for aftermarket modifications.
The Cat 325’s technology suite includes Cat Grade with 2D, Grade Assist, Lift Assist, and Payload, providing operators with tools to boost accuracy and efficiency. Together with electrohydraulic efficiency and Smart Mode operation, the system automatically adjusts engine power to match hydraulic demand, reducing fuel use without sacrificing performance.
To further cut operating costs, the 325 is engineered with extended maintenance intervals and simplified service access. Ground-level engine oil checks and longer-life filters help reduce downtime and improve jobsite safety.
Compact yet powerful, the new Cat 325 with HD undercarriage delivers the stability of a larger machine while maintaining the agility needed for tight-space operation—an ideal solution for contractors tackling heavy-duty lifting and grading applications.
