Manitowoc has expanded the compatibility of its Grove Wire Rope Cleaner, allowing the maintenance system to be used on wire ropes from 12mm to 38mm in diameter, regardless of crane brand or rope lay.
The company said that the update was done based on customer feedback and is relevant to mixed crane fleets. Rather than limiting the tool to Grove mobile cranes, the revised system can now be used across a wider range of machines, potentially simplifying rope maintenance procedures for fleet operators.
Mixed crane fleets are common among Middle East contractors, lifting specialists and rental companies operating equipment from multiple manufacturers, and wire rope remains a critical maintenance item on mobile cranes. Regular cleaning and lubrication help control contamination, reduce internal friction and protect against corrosion, while also supporting inspection of the rope.
Manitowoc’s own Grove service documentation recommends periodic lubrication throughout a rope’s working life, with particular attention required for sections running over sheaves or otherwise difficult to inspect.
Manitowoc originally launched the Wire Rope Cleaner in 2025 as an aftermarket system designed to automate cleaning and lubrication. The initial system was developed around the rope diameters used on Grove mobile cranes and was available for five diameters between 16mm and 24mm.

Faster cleaning, lower downtime
The system uses a clamped housing and inserts around the rope to remove dirt and contaminants before lubricant is applied. Manitowoc says the process can be completed significantly faster than conventional manual cleaning methods, reducing technician time and planned downtime. The company has continued to position the cleaner alongside other Grove aftermarket products, including boom lubrication equipment and service tools.
Customer feedback subsequently prompted Manitowoc to address the limitations around rope diameter and crane compatibility. Following a redesign, the system can now accommodate ropes from 12mm to 38mm, with any rope lay and on cranes from any manufacturer.
“With the Wire Rope Cleaner, we’ve made maintenance more consistent and helped customers maximize the life of the rope. From our ongoing customer conversations, we also saw a chance to optimize the system. What started as a technical question around differing wire rope sizes became an opportunity to improve the product,” said Astrid Hager-Guthrie, parts pricing manager for Grove Europe.
For Middle East operators, where mobile cranes can face high utilisation, dusty working environments and demanding lifting schedules, reducing the time required for routine maintenance can have a direct impact on equipment availability. A system that can be deployed across mixed fleets may also help standardise maintenance practices between machines.

Part of Manitowoc’s Voice of Customer approach
Manitowoc says the development forms part of its Voice of the Customer approach, using feedback from equipment owners and technicians to refine aftermarket products. The company has increasingly placed lifecycle support alongside new crane development, including maintenance tools, refurbishment services, parts and connected fleet technologies.
“Keeping a wire rope clean may not seem the highest profile part of crane ownership, but it has a very real impact on uptime and operating costs. Because a crane without a rope has no use. Through our Voice of the Customer process, we’ve made a successful maintenance tool even more versatile. It’s a practical example of CRANES+50 delivering greater value to customers across the crane lifecycle,” said Astrid Hager-Guthrie.
