Caterpillar launches new hydraulic hammers for small machines

Caterpillar has introduced a new series of hydraulic hammer attachments for use with its mini and compact equipment in a range of breaking and earthwork applications.

The global construction machinery giant said in an announcement that the new Cat B-Prefix hydraulic hammers are available in B4(s) and B6(s) silenced and B4 and B6 non-silenced versions and are designed for “plug-and-play” operation while delivering optimum life-cycle value.

The new hammers are suited for skid steer loaders, multi-terrain loaders, compact track loaders, mini hydraulic excavators from 3-8t operating weights, and backhoe loaders working in a range of construction and light-demolition applications, including site prep, landscaping, masonry, and concrete breaking, said Cat.

The announcement added that the B-Prefix hammers use a simple design that ensures reliability, versatility, ease of use and maintenance. Matching Caterpillar-designed hydraulic kits are also offered as a package solution and are the best fit for Cat machines, providing customers a breaker package with superior design and benefits, said the manufacturer.

In terms of design, the new hammers come with a simple industry-standard modular design with two moving parts in the piston and valve. Flat-top mounting enables a compact working envelope and compatibility with a full complement of brackets to suit preference of coupler, linkage kinematics, or machine size, explained Cat.

To ease field service, the bushings are field-replaceable, and the lower bushing can be rotated 90-degrees for improved wear performance. An included toolbox contains a charging kit, hammer paste, and spare parts. The housings are designed to facilitate common maintenance items, and grease fitting and gas pressure check point are easily accessible on the machines

Cat added that a gas-fired operation cycle delivers consistent, long-term high production while major components, such as the cylinder, back-head, front-head, piston and tool, are manufactured with high – quality materials and processes.

The piston transfers long shock waves into material and piston diameters are matched for maximum energy transfer, while the piston design and surface finish provide superior oil retention and seal life. An inward-type oil-control valve improves structural integrity and lowers failure rate.

The mounting brackets are interchangeable between H-prefix and B-prefix models while the tool types for the new hammers include moil, cone, parallel and transverse chisel, and blunt, allowing the hammer to be adapted to an extensive range of applications, Cat explained.
