Liebherr has introduced the LMC 80 mixing cutter, a new soil mixing solution developed for ground improvement projects requiring low-noise and low-vibration construction methods.
Designed for use with the company’s LRB 23 and LRB 355 piling and drilling rigs, the LMC 80 is supplied as a complete package, with the carrier machine, mixing cutter and control system engineered to work together.
The attachment is suitable for all types of mixable soils, enabling contractors to install load-bearing or sealing elements for foundation and ground improvement works. Four cutting wheels are powered by a maximum torque of 2 x 80kNm and operate at speeds of up to 30rpm, depending on ground conditions.
When paired with the LRB 23, the system can produce soil mixing elements to depths of 36m, while the larger LRB 355 extends the maximum depth to 40m. The machine can create panels with cross-sections ranging from 2,800mm by 500mm to 1,000mm, depending on project requirements. For added flexibility, the mixing cutter can rotate through 135 degrees around the mixing axis without repositioning the leader.
Integration of technologies
Liebherr has also integrated several digital technologies into the system. A verticality measurement function provides real-time guidance to operators, while the LIPOS positioning system uses satellite technology to improve alignment accuracy. The company’s MyJobsite platform records and analyses machine, positioning and process data for project management.
The LMC 80 is mounted onto the carrier machine while positioned horizontally, reducing installation time and eliminating the need for work at height. The carrier’s crowd winch then raises the attachment into its operating position. The LRB 23 and LRB 355 can also be quickly converted for piling or drilling work by replacing the mixing cutter with a rotary drive, hammer or vibrator, allowing contractors to use the same base machine across multiple deep foundation applications.
According to Liebherr, the cutter soil mixing process also reduces material transport requirements because existing soil is mixed with a binding suspension, eliminating the need to remove excavated material. The LMC 80 was unveiled during the 50th anniversary celebrations of Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH in June 2026 and is now commercially available.
